[...] Stasys is an artist who has long piqued my interest. The first time I set
eyes on one of his posters, I was so moved by the experience that a chill ran down
my spine. Normally quite imperturbable, I found myself rocked with fear on viewing
his imagenary world. It was almost as though something crazed within me were speaking
in a murmur in the poster. Never before had I ever experienced anything so sensitive
or so beautifully frightening in my life.

During a visit to Poland last year Mr Tanaka had gone to Stasys's studio and viewed his works
in their original form. It was then for the first time that he recognized the poor
quality of reproduction of Stasys's works as generally available, and so he arranged
special printings in preparation for the Tokyo show. Because Stasys is open to using any
medium that feels can convey his artistic images - tempera, pastels, gouache,
watercolor - he is said to have taken great pleasure in seeing his painstakingly
selected shades and textures reproduced to such stunning effect.
